Hi. I'm Joe. I'm a writer, author, and contributing writer for Scary Monsters magazine. I'm a huge classic horror and sci-fi fan and collector. I also enjoy comics, 80's toys, books, and working out.
I've tried to make a promise to myself to be more involved in forums and less on Facebook. FB has too much negativity and you'll never find a closer community than that on forums such as this, Universal Monster Army, and Classic Horror Fil Board.
I've purchased from House of the Unusual in the past and have been more than pleased with my dealings with Eddie. He's a top notch guy and someone I can call a friend.
Joe I feel the same way for you and will be getting in contact with you shortly. You have been with me since the beginning and really appreciate that Thank you my friend. God Bless you and your family for ever.
No problem Buddy. Glad to see this new site and to see you back on the UMA page as well. I'm trying to get more away from Facebook and back to the forums. So much of a better and closer community on the forum pages. Facebook is too much drama and negativity.
Hello, Eddie and Joe: I just set up my profile and wanted to say hello to you and the rest of the gang. Happy to be a part of this community. Some things that make me laugh: Vintage comic book ads and old mail-order items, Sea-Monkeys ( the king of the kids mail-order market as far as I'm concerned ) and Eddie Guevara. Buddy: YOU CRACK ME UP! You, Sir, are a treasure! ๐
Hello back, Mr. Joe: Thanks for the welcome. I love this kinda stuff and I love this site. Of course I know Eddie and have recently met you via phone, I'm familiar with Kirk Demarais because of his stellar books, "Life of the Party" and "Mail-Order Mysteries" and I see an old friend from my past in here as well ... Dan Goodsell -- talented, interesting and one heck of a nice guy. It's a quality group you've got here so far. -- TRM ๐ ( That's the closest thing to an emoji in X-Ray Spex I could find. )
New members? Fresh blood? WELCOME! I love hearing about other peopleโs mail-order experiences, favorite ads, disappointing items, collecting interests, etc. Tell us something about yourselves. Join in. Make fun of Eddie. Be nice to Joe. ( Just leave me out of it. I got no skin in this game. )
Hello everyone, My name is Charlie Iโm 38. About 10 years ago I stopped drinking alcohol and using opiate pain medication for chronic pain from a motorcycle accident I got in when I was 12 back in the early 90โs. I was drinking so much for 20 + years that I almost died from liver failure and was hospitalized for a week. When I got out of the hospital all the boozing and drug use stopped I got an uncontrollable desire to start collecting old novelties.. but mostly anything with a skull or skeleton on it from the 60โs - 80โs. My favorite thing to collect is old skull & crossbones rings from in the back of old magazines and comic books... some as early as the 1940โs. I would have to say one of my best rings in my collection is the โLucky skull ringโ made from genuine eternium! They used to be advertised in the old Johnson Smith catalogues... sometimes alongside the lucky pirate ring also made of eternium! โI have never seen an actual example or a real picture of the lucky pirate ring.โ One of my dreams is to at least see a real picture of that pirate ring. hopefully someone has one out there somewhere. But I fear that they are all gone. Anyways thank you for taking the time to read a little about myself and what started my collecting.
God bless!
@Chuck Pratt Welcome, Charlie: First off, congrats on the major U-Turn youโve taken in your life. Thatโs incredible. Seriously, mad props and major respect to you for tha.
Hopefully Eddie will have some info and examples of the old skull rings. Iโm very familiar with the ads and catalog listings but have never searched for one myself. Itโs a hard thing to search for with all the contemporary versions on the market.
You've certainly found the right community for novelty mail-order skull rings. Thatโs the sorta stuff we love here at House of the Unusual.
Just happened to still be up and wanted to say hello and welcome.
Chuck Congratulation on that fantastic turn around. The Pirate ring thing...Give me a few days on that and ask again. Anyway great to have you on board as Mr Tod said you are in the right place...God Bless!
Welcome home Chuck, there's always a room available at the House of the Unusual. Congrats on remaining strong through all your obstacles. Check out our podcast. If you'd like, maybe you can be a guest and talk about your collection and love of skull rings. Also, if you feel comfortable, you can tell everyone in podcast land your story of challenges and triumphs...I'm sure there are many more out there that have been in, or are in, similar situations. Let myself or Eddie (the guy with the 70's porn mustache in his photo, lol) know if that's something you'd be interested in. Thanks for joining our humble family.
